Fried Chicken, Craft Cocktails, and Roller Coasters at Elitch on Aug. 20

Picture a wing in one hand, a craft cocktail in the other, and the Twister II clacking up the first hill right behind you. That is the pitch for August 20, and honestly, it is the kind of only-in-Colorado mashup I live for.

Chicken Fight & Burger Brawl is coming back to Elitch Gardens on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Same park you have driven past a hundred times off I-25, 2000 Elitch Circle, right there in downtown Denver. For one night the amusement park stops being just an amusement park and turns into a full-on eating arena.

Here is the setup. More than 40 regional restaurants show up and go head-to-head. Not for a ribbon. For actual titles. Four of them.

Four belts up for grabs

There are four championship categories on the line: Best Fried Chicken, Best Wings, Best Burger, and Best Cocktail.

And this is the part that makes it fun. You do not just stand there and eat. You judge. Attendees sample unlimited creations and then help crown the champions through People's Choice votes. So your ballot actually means something. That plate of wings you keep going back to? That is you campaigning for a winner, whether you meant to or not.

The Burger Brawl piece is new for 2026. Chicken Fight has been the main event, but this year they bolted Burger Brawl on right next to it. So now it is chicken and wings and burgers all fighting for your vote in the same night. Which is dangerous for me, because I have exactly zero self-control at an all-you-can-eat situation.

The drinks are not an afterthought

The Best Cocktail category tells you they take the bar side seriously, and the beverage program backs that up. It is an all-inclusive setup: premium spirits, craft cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic options if you are the designated adult of the group.

Quick but important note. This is a 21+ event. Every single person. So no strollers, no wristbands for the kids. This is a grown-up night at the amusement park, which is a sentence I did not expect to write but here we are.

Why a Thursday, though

This one is a smart detail most people would blow right past. The festival lands on a Thursday on purpose.

Restaurants live and die on the weekend. Friday and Saturday are the money nights, and pulling your head chef off the line during a Saturday dinner rush is basically arson for a restaurant. So organizers hold this thing on a Thursday specifically so kitchens can send their actual chefs to compete without gutting their weekend service. That is the kind of behind-the-scenes decision that tells you the people running this actually understand the industry they are serving.

Makes sense too, because this whole thing comes out of DiningOut magazine, which knows the Colorado food world about as well as anyone.

It is also a nonprofit play

Here is the part that is easy to miss when you are three cocktails and a chicken sandwich deep. The event is tied to the Colorado Restaurant Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that has been around since 1987.

So you are not just eating for sport. There is a real organization behind this, one that has been in the corner of Colorado restaurant workers for nearly 40 years. That is a long time watching this industry through booms, busts, and everything 2020 threw at it. Feels good knowing the ticket you buy is doing something beyond feeding your face.

Getting there without the parking headache

Elitch sits right downtown, which means you have options and you should use them.

RTD gets you there. Both the bus and the light rail stop at Elitch Gardens, so if you are planning on sampling that all-inclusive bar (and let us be real, you are), take the train. Hayley and I have this rule for anything downtown with an open bar attached: somebody is on rail duty. There is paid parking on site if you need it, but on a night built around unlimited cocktails, the light rail is the move.

The real appeal

Look, food festivals are a dime a dozen in Denver now. What sets this one apart is the location doing double duty. You are wandering an actual theme park, sampling from 40-plus kitchens, casting votes on the best fried chicken in the region, and then walking straight onto a roller coaster in between.

That combination does not exist anywhere else around here. Comfort food and thrill rides on the same ticket. It is a little ridiculous, and that is exactly why it works.

So mark it. Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Elitch Gardens. Bring your appetite, bring your voting hand, and maybe skip the ride right after the burger round. Buckle up. This one is worth your night.
