Six events. One weekend. All within a short drive of downtown, and a couple of them are literally three blocks apart.
Here is the thing most people miss about the last weekend in September this year. It is loaded. Like, plan-your-parking loaded. You have got a first-ever food festival landing at Civic Center Park, an architecture festival cracking open buildings you normally only walk past, Red Rocks running back-to-back nights, a 100-mile bike ride climbing Lookout Mountain, and the Avs dropping the puck. And it is all happening during Colorado's 150th-anniversary year, which is not an accident. People are leaning into it.
So let me walk you through it. Buckle up.
Sept. 25-27, 2026. Civic Center Park, 101 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. The footprint runs along 14th Avenue between Cherokee and Bannock.
This is the big debut. Panda Fest has never been in Denver before, and it is showing up during the Mid-Autumn Festival with the whole thing presented in partnership with the Civic Center Conservancy. What that means for you is 60-plus Asian food vendors serving more than 200 street-food dishes, plus 30-plus merchandise vendors. Two hundred dishes. I mean, you could go all three days and not repeat.
Hours are Friday 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. General admission is
Civic Center Park hosting this is a big deal, honestly. That park sits right between the Capitol and the City and County Building, and when it fills up, it fills up. Worth your attention because a festival's first year in a city is usually the year the founders are trying hardest.
Sept. 24-27, 2026. Public headquarters at Design Workshop, 1490 Lawrence St.
This is the Denver Architecture Foundation's design festival, and the 2026 theme is 'Destination Downtown.' It is a mix of free and ticketed stuff, and the whole point is you get inside buildings and behind doors you do not normally get behind. If you have ever walked past a downtown building and wondered what the upper floors actually look like, this is the weekend you find out.
It kicks off Thursday, Sept. 24, with a 2:30 p.m. keynote by Ray Calabro, FAIA, at the Historic Evans School. Then there is a free Common Ground reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, 1400 Curtis St., with welcome remarks from Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. And here is the tie-in. The programming is built around Colorado's 150th anniversary, so a lot of the sites lean into how downtown got to be downtown.
Side note for the real estate people. This is basically the best free market research you can do. Walking through buildings, seeing how spaces get used and reused, understanding why a block feels the way it feels. That is the stuff that tells you where a neighborhood is going, and it does not cost you a dollar for most of it.
Friday, Sept. 25, 2026. Ball Arena.
Preseason hockey, I know, but it is Avs hockey at Ball Arena on a Friday night, and that is a good problem to have. They host Winnipeg here, and it is your first live look before the games start counting. If you want the real thing, the regular season opener is Sept. 30 at Ball Arena against the Los Angeles Kings.
And Ball Arena being where it is, right there on the west edge of downtown, means you can stack this with Panda Fest earlier in the day and barely move your car. That is the kind of weekend this is.
Sept. 25 and Sept. 26, 2026. Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison.
Two nights, two very different shows.
Friday, Sept. 25, The Revivalists play with Ax and the Hatchetmen. Saturday, Sept. 26, Big Gigantic headlines with The Funk Hunters, Motifv and Drew Birch. So if you want a Friday that leans rootsy and a Saturday that goes full electronic, Red Rocks has you both nights back to back.
I do not need to sell you on Red Rocks. You know. But the thing to know this weekend is that Saturday is going to be busy out in Morrison for another reason entirely, which brings me to the next one.
Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026. Ride HQ at the Avenues of Northfield, 8316 E. Northfield Blvd.
This is the 16th annual running of it, and the routes go 25, 50, 85 and 100 miles, plus an 11.7-mile Ice Cream Ride for the people who have their priorities straight. The 100-mile course is the monster. It climbs Lookout Mountain and rolls past Dinosaur Ridge, Red Rocks and Morrison, with the 100-mile riders starting between 6:30 and 7 a.m. and racking up roughly 6,000 feet of elevation gain.
Six thousand feet. On a bike. If you ask me, that is a lot of suffering for a good cause, and it is a good cause. Bicycle Colorado is the principal beneficiary.
Now connect the dots. The century route passes Red Rocks and Morrison on Saturday, and Big Gigantic is playing Red Rocks that same night. So Morrison is going to be moving all day. If you are driving out there for the show, give yourself extra time, because there will be cyclists on those roads in the morning and a full amphitheater by night.
Sept. 24, 25 and 26, 2026. Comedy Works Downtown.
Three nights of Ralph Barbosa at Comedy Works Downtown, which is the room in Larimer Square, the basement one that everyone who knows comedy in this city knows. If your Saturday plans fall through, or if you just want something indoors after standing in a food line all afternoon, this is the easy call. Three chances to catch him, Thursday through Saturday.
Here is how I would think about it. You are not doing all six. Nobody is doing all six. But the geography makes two or three doable in a day.
Friday, hit Panda Fest at Civic Center in the afternoon, walk over to the Avs at Ball Arena, or split off to Red Rocks for The Revivalists. Doors Open Denver is running Thursday through Sunday, so you can slot the architecture stuff in whenever, and a lot of it is free. Saturday belongs to whoever wants it. Ride 100 miles, watch Big Gigantic, eat 200 dishes worth of street food, or just go laugh in a basement. Sunday, Panda Fest runs till 8 p.m., so there is your soft landing.
The through-line here is that all of this is close. Civic Center Park, the Denver Performing Arts Complex, Ball Arena, Comedy Works, they are basically walkable to each other. Red Rocks and Morrison are a short drive west. That is the whole pitch. One weekend, one tank of gas, and more going on than most cities get in a month.
