Lowriders and Beat Poetry Take Over West Colfax Aug. 7

Picture West Colfax on a Friday night in August. Chrome bumpers. A lowrider idling low and slow past a gallery window. Somebody reading Beat poetry out loud while a band tunes up two doors down. That is not a normal night on Colfax. That is the Cruisin' Colfax Summer Art Crawl, and it is coming back on Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Here is the part people miss about this stretch of Lakewood. Most folks only know it as the road to Casa Bonita, or the accidental exit on the way to somewhere else. But the whole thing is a state-certified Colorado Creative District. It is called 40 West Arts, and it runs right along historic West Colfax Avenue with more than 40 arts and cultural organizations and 30-plus galleries, cafes and boutiques packed in.

So this is not a random block party. This is one of metro Denver's real arts districts throwing its biggest night of the summer.

First Friday on steroids

That is not my line. That is how 40 West Arts describes its own Art Crawls. They do a monthly First Friday, gallery openings, the usual. But the Crawls are the supersized version. Pop-up spaces. Performance artists. Interactive stuff you can actually touch and mess with. First Friday on steroids, in their words.

The August edition leans all the way into cars. Last year's 2025 crawl carried the theme "Art of the Wheel," and the 2026 Cruisin' Colfax night keeps that motif rolling. So you get car shows, new gallery exhibitions dropping that night, live bands, Beat poetry readings, and car-themed short films playing along the avenue. It is a rolling gallery, basically. You walk Colfax and the art comes at you from every direction.

And if you have been to one of these before, you know about the Handsome Little Devils. Past crawls have featured their theatrical "Joy Bomb" art parade that literally circles the district's art hubs. It is loud and weird and family-friendly in the best way.

Liz Black is the executive director of 40 West Arts, and the nonprofit has been building this thing for years. It shows.

The free part is real

Let me be clear about the price, because this matters. The crawl is free. Open to all. No ticket, no wristband, no cover charge at the door. The district also notes it has ample parking, which on Colfax is not nothing.

But honestly, if you can skip the car, do it. The Lamar station on RTD's W Line opened April 26, 2013, and it sits right inside the 40 West Arts District. So you can train in, walk the crawl, grab a beer, and train home without touching your steering wheel. That is a rare setup for a Colorado summer night.

Speaking of the beer. WestFax Brewing operates out of Lamar Station Plaza, and they developed the "40 West IPA" with support from the arts district and the West Colfax business groups. So there is a beer named after the neighborhood, brewed in the neighborhood, poured steps from the train that carries the neighborhood's name. Side note, that is exactly the kind of hyper-local thing I love.

Come early, stay for the ArtLine

Here is my move if you go. Get there before 5 and walk the 40 West ArtLine first. It is a free, 4-mile walkable and bikeable outdoor art route with more than 70 installations. Murals. Sculptures. Fence art. Interactive pieces. It connects three parks and it is out there 24/7, crawl or no crawl. So you warm up with a couple miles of public art, then roll into the main event as the sun drops.

The central hub sits at 6501 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood. That is your anchor point. From there the whole district opens up, including the campus of Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, which is a big reason this stretch has the creative gravity it does. You put an art college on a historic avenue and give it a decade, and this is what grows.

Why this corner is worth watching

The real story on West Colfax is that it has been quietly turning into one of the more interesting corners of the metro. You have got a light rail station, an art college, a growing brewery scene, a 4-mile art route, and a nonprofit district that keeps programming nights like this one. That combination does not stay under the radar forever.

For anybody paying attention to where the Front Range is heading, transit-connected pockets with real cultural anchors tend to be the ones that hold value. This one has the W Line, the galleries, and Casa Bonita all inside the same few square miles. That is a lot of reasons for people to keep showing up.
