Concrete is the second most used material on the planet after water. And making the stuff is filthy. Cement production alone accounts for roughly 8% of global CO2 emissions, which is a number that should make you sit up.

So here is the thing. One of the companies trying to crack that problem is not in San Francisco or Boston. It is right here, near Golden, and it just put a shovel in the ground.
Terra CO2, a low-carbon cement technology company, started construction in June 2026 on a new 30,167-square-foot concrete laboratory and headquarters at 1341 Avery St. Completion is expected by April 2027, per a report published Aug. 10, 2026. And this is not a small step for them. The new building more than doubles their current local footprint of about 12,000 square feet of pilot plant and lab space in Golden.

The move keeps the whole crew home. All 32 of Terra CO2's Denver-area employees are relocating from the existing Golden facility into the new building. These are high-skill jobs, the kind of engineering and materials-science work that cities fight over, and they are staying in the metro.
Most people do not realize how deliberate a choice this is. Terra could have chased incentives somewhere else. Instead they are doubling down on Golden as home base. They are keeping their principal R&D shop up in Vancouver, Canada, where co-founder and Chief Science Officer DJ Lake runs a 10-person team and a small pilot plant. The expansion comes right after Pete Lyons stepped in as CEO. So you have new leadership and a new building breaking ground almost at the same time, which tells you where the company thinks it is headed.

Here is what they are actually building toward. Terra CO2 makes something called a supplementary cementitious material, or SCM. Fancy term. What it means in practice is a substitute you mix into concrete so you need less traditional Portland cement, which is the dirty part.
And they make it from rocks that are everywhere. Silicate rocks like granite, basalt, alluvial sand and gravel, and clay-sand mixtures, all sourced from mines that are already permitted. No exotic supply chain. Just abundant stone.
The new lab will support their electric vitrification technology and a product called Opus Zero, which they describe as a zero-carbon cement alternative. It is in active concrete trials right now. The math they are chasing is real. Each ton of Portland cement displaced by their OPUS product achieves a 70% CO2 reduction, and the material can replace up to 40% of the Portland cement in a concrete mix. That is not a rounding error. That is a serious dent in one of the planet's dirtiest industries.

Look, cleantech is easy to be skeptical about. Big promises, thin wallets, and then the company quietly folds. That does not appear to be the situation here.
Terra signed $82 million in Series B equity commitments back in February 2025 and has raised roughly $61 million in venture capital. And the names on the cap table are the tell. Mining giant Rio Tinto is in. So is Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the fund Bill Gates founded. When Rio Tinto, a company that digs rock for a living, and Gates money both write checks to the same cement startup, that is worth your attention.

And the buildout is happening. Terra is finishing its first full-scale commercial OPUS SCM facility in Cleburne, Texas, in partnership with Asher Materials. That plant can crank out up to 240,000 tons a year, with product set to start shipping mid-2027 to serve the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
So think about the pipeline for a second. The recipe and the trials get worked out in Golden. The plant in Texas makes it at scale and ships it to one of the fastest-growing metros in the country. That is a Colorado company exporting a solution.
The concrete angle is the headline, but pay attention to the real estate and jobs piece underneath it, because that is the part people miss.
Golden keeps landing this kind of tenant, and it is not an accident. Between the School of Mines talent pipeline right up the road and the flex manufacturing space around town, you get exactly the setup a company like Terra needs. Lab, office, and pilot production under one roof at 1341 Avery St. When a homegrown company chooses to expand at home instead of decamping to a coast, that is a signal about where the metro's industrial future is pointing.
Thirty-two jobs might not sound huge. But they are the right kind of jobs, they are staying put, and the building they are moving into more than doubles the company's local footprint. That is a company betting on Golden, and betting that concrete can get a whole lot cleaner. Buckle up. This one is worth watching.
